The next day, after much needed sleep, we set off to see Marco the angel.

“What’s he like?” I whispered to Max. “I’ve never met an angel before. Are they like us or are they all in white with wings? Do they sit on clouds all day playing the harp?”

Max snorted loudly at the suggestion. “No wings,” he explained. “And they don’t dress in all white. They’re much like us but since they were never human they don’t look exactly the same. For example, their skin is more iridescent and their eyes are entirely silver. They look like pools of liquid mercury.”

“Freaky!”

“Just don’t say that when you meet Marco. One more thing you should know is that they can hear your thoughts. So be careful what you think and say around him.”

“Seriously? How cool is that!” I exclaimed.

“Yeah, real cool until they hear your most embarrassing moments and then tease you mercilessly for the next century,” Max muttered offhandedly.

“Oh, I guess that would be bad. What embarrassing secret does Marco have on you?” I teased. This was taking my mind off of why where were going there in the first place, and I relished the distraction.

“Sorry, not telling you,” Max declared.

“C’mon! Just a hint”.

“Never going to happen!”

I pushed out my bottom lip in a pout and gave him my best sad face. It almost worked and I could see his resolve crumbling, but then we reached the door that would take us to Marco’s office and he changed the subject.

“Okay, this is it. When we get in there, let me do the talking. He’ll try to hear your thoughts anyway, but stay focused on Jessica. If you think about her enough, he’ll see that it’s what you need for closure,” Max instructed.

“Not a problem. I’ve been consumed by thoughts of Jessica since you told me,” I answered. I spent hours last night going through old picture albums I had of Jessica and watching home movies. Cassie was amazing enough to get these for me—Lord only knows how— and I cried and smiled and laughed as I watched them.

Max took my hand, giving it a small squeeze as he led me towards a large blue door that was at least ten feet high. We strode through side by side, and it felt like being sucked out into space. Everything went black, and I felt like I was falling and being pushed pulled at the same time. The pressure on my newly healed bones was indescribable. I clenched my teeth as pain ripped through my newly healed body, but it only lasted a minute. Before I knew it, I was standing in what appeared to be a waiting room, and Max was at my side. I immediately turned and vomited in the closest trash can.

“What was that?” I cried, wiping my mouth and wishing I had some gum.

“We changed realms. Angels aren’t based on our realm; they have their own closer to the Alpha.” Max handed me a tissue and looked very concerned for just a moment.
